Southwest France - Bordeaux

One of the best kept secrets of the French waterways is the Canal de Garonne between Toulouse and Bordeaux in southwest France. Saint Louis barge owners, Peter and Wendy Carrington, love to share their knowledge of the region to delight up to six guests.

The Aquitaine regions extends from
Perigueux (Dordogne) in the north, to Bordeaux of wine fame in the west, to the Pyrenees mountains in the south and to Valence d'Agen near Toulouse in the east. It is the significant wine-growing, agricultural and forestry area of France.

The historical area of Gascony
became famous for such historical characters as Comte d’Artagnan, the inspiration for The Three Musketeers; Cyrano de Bergerac and Henry III of Navarre who became king of France as Henry IV. With more than 1,000 castles and manor houses, as well as beautiful old villages and historic towns, it is a visitor's playground. The sunny weather is ideal for the many fruit orchards and fresh market produce.

In 2016, Saint Louis will be cruising just east of Bordeaux between Boe and Meilhan-sur-Garonne with a visit the village and vineyards of St. Emilion.
